As part of MDF’s 40th anniversary, we’re sharing the stories of our offices worldwide. This story takes us to MDF Kenya, established in 2018 as a strategic expansion into East Africa, with its base in Nairobi, a central hub for the region, and a new branch in Mombasa. With a team of 16 talented professionals, MDF Kenya has steadily grown, undertaking assignments across Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and South Africa.

Innovative focus and expanding portfolio

Since opening, MDF Kenya has expanded into renowned fields such as the blue economy, circular economy, plastics management, and value-to-waste initiatives. As well, the office has broadened its portfolio to work with refugee and internally displaced communities, supporting urgent social and environmental needs across the region. With a strong and diverse client base spanning both Dutch and non-Dutch organisations, supported by public and private sector funding, MDF Kenya has made its mark on regional development.

Dynamic and fun office culture

MDF Kenya is known for its vibrant team culture, where collaboration and a sense of fun go hand in hand. "Our motto is MDF = Make Development Fun," says Susanne van Lieshout, MDF Kenya office director. Regular game nights bring the team together for charades, board games, and storytelling sessions about humorous moments from work travels. This positive atmosphere ensures a balance between professionalism and approachability, creating an office environment that’s both efficient and enjoyable. “We are formal with an informal twist,” Susanne adds, “and we always keep things light while working hard!”

Role in business and community development

The office’s dedication to development extends to fostering international business connections, as MDF Kenya proudly hosts the Netherlands-Kenya Business Hub, the Chamber of Commerce for Dutch businesses in Kenya. Through impactful projects and community engagement, the team supports various local initiatives, strengthening their commitment to making a difference in East Africa.

Celebrating success

One of the office’s most memorable moments was winning €100 in the Talent Show celebrating MDF's 40th anniversary. "Yes, we just won €100 as an office. It was a blast!” says Susanne, reflecting on the achievement that highlighted the team’s creative and competitive spirit.

Vision for growth and sustainability

Looking forward, MDF Kenya aims to expand its footprint in fields like the blue economy and circularity while upholding its core values. The office is also dedicated to promoting a greener environment, reducing single-use plastics, using recyclable food containers, and encouraging sustainable practices. “We’re constantly adapting to Kenya’s changing landscape, but we do it with fun and flexibility,” Susanne notes.

As MDF Global celebrates 40 years, MDF Kenya looks back on its journey with pride and looks forward to future opportunities, collaboration, and sustainable impact across East Africa. And when asked what she wishes for MDF on this milestone anniversary, Susanne’s answer is simple: “To party…”
